Airport and Transportation

Aeropuerto Internacional Luis Muñoz Marín (SJU)

Distance: 3 miles east of the Ritz-Carlton
Drive time: 10-15 minutes

San Juan flights arrive and depart from Aeropuerto Internacional Luis Muñoz Marín, the city's only airport just 3 miles from the hotel. The hotel does not have shuttle service from the airport. Therefore, a taxi would be the best option to get from the airport to the hotel. The cost for a taxi from the airport to the hotel is around $10.00. Another option for getting to the hotel are rental cars and “publicos”—public vans. A number of rental companies are available at the airport. Look for rental car discounts when you book your San Juan flight. And there is a terminal for publicos there.

Getting around in San Juan

Driving is the typical way to get around and between the other districts, and most car companies have rentals available at the airport in San Juan. You can use a valid drivers’ license from any country and a major credit card to rent a car. Traffic moves on the right, as in the United States. Speed limits within the city are usually 55 mph for wide boulevards and 30 mph on narrow or residential roads. Keep in mind that speed limit signs are in miles but distances are in kilometers, which can be tricky. There are plenty of gas stations - gas is sold in liters and is often self-serve.

Buses and taxis are reliable alternatives to renting a car. The Metropolitan Bus Authority controls routes in San Juan, and stops are indicated by colored signs marked Parada (stop), sometimes bearing the logo AMA (the Bus Authority’s Spanish abbreviation). The public bus system operates from 5:30 a.m. to about 9:30 p.m., seven days a week. The bus fare is approximately $1.50, one way. You can get bus route maps from the Ritz-Carlton Hotel or the tourist office.
